Famous People from Scranton, Iowa

Scranton can boast of having some famous people whose “roots” belong to Scranton. Earl Wampler, a professional wrestler in the late 1920’s was known around the country. He had nicknames such as “The Scranton Coal Miner”, the “The Villain”, and “The Rough One”. He was especially known for his trademark “rabbit punches”.

Penny Johnson, a soprano opera singer has her “roots” in Scranton. She has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City! Penny has studied extensively and performed in theaters throughout the United States. She is the daughter of Beryl and Jean Johnson, who still reside south of Scranton.

Last but not least, Scranton is the hometown of Bryce Paup, famous NFL football player.  Bryce is a former football defensive end and linebacker who played for the Green Bay Packers (1990–1994), Buffalo Bills (1995–1997), Jacksonville Jaguars (1998–1999), Minnesota Vikings (2000 and 2002). He played collegiately at the University of Northern Iowa and was selected by the Packers in the 6th round of the 1990 NFL Draft.  Bryce was named the NFL defensive player of the year by the Associated Press in 1995 and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.  He is the son of Byron and Harriet Paup of rural Scranton.

When visitors come to Scranton, they’ll find a whole lot of friendly people and one water tower– still standing very close to City Hall.
