About Scranton

Scranton owes its existence to the Cedar Rapids & Missouri Railroad (now the Chicago & North Western) which completed its line through Greene County in 1866.  Scranton was platted in 1869 and named after Mr. Scranton, the owner of a steel mill in Scranton, PA that furnished many of the rail road ties for the CNW railroad.  Scranton became incorporated in May 18th, 1880 and was first known as Scranton Center.

Scranton is located on the west edge of Greene County, with a population of 604; it is a community with great pride and great people.  The Scranton community supports its own public library with a great selection of books, periodicals and new release movies. It also has several computers with internet access for patrons.  Scranton has its own fire department and rescue unit.

Scranton boasts of its own “Lost Lagoon” located on the southwest corner of town where there is a pond for fishing and an open shelter. Pathways allow walking throughout the small park.  There is also the Scranton City Park, located on the west side of town, right off Highway 25, and just north of the overpass. Visitors will find a shelter house with electricity and a playground.  The third park in Scranton is Gazebo Park, located in the business district at 1107 Main.  The City also owns the former school property which includes the playground, baseball/softball fields, the old football field, concession stand and sand volleyball court.

Each year you will find Main Street closed and full of fun and games for the annual Scranton Family Fun night, or previously known as the Water Tower Festival.  This annual event is loaded with food, beverages, games, rides and most of all fun!
